WINTER TIPS FOR YOU & YOUR PET

Winter offers up situations that can endanger your pet.  By taking precautions, you can decrease the chance that disaster will occur. Northside Veterinary Clinic offers these tips for pet owners to keep their furry friends safe this winter.

KEEP PETS INDOORS  Try to keep pets indoors during the winter, especially when it’s really cold outside. Indoor pets should have sleeping quarters in a draft-free, warm area with their bed or mattress elevated slightly off the floor. Sit down where you want your pet to sleep before deciding on a spot. A draft that is closer to the floor might not be noticeable when you are standing up.

PROVIDE SHELTERS FOR OUTDOOR PETS  If your pets have to stay outdoors they should be given shelter that’s warm and dry. Shelters should be insulated or heated. They should be elevated off of the ground to prevent moisture accumulation and have a door to keep out the elements. Try to point the entrance facing south, and away from the direction from which wind in your area frequently blows. Make sure all pets have access to clean, fresh water that’s not frozen. In severely cold weather, no pet should be kept outside.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR DOG'S PAWS  If you walk your dog on sidewalks that have been treated with de-icer, make sure to wash the dog’s paws when you get home as these chemicals can irritate the skin.

CHECK UNDER THE HOOD  Cats, house pets and wildlife may climb onto vehicle engines for warmth during cold weather. Be sure to check under the hood before starting your vehicle and honk the horn to startle any animals seeking shelter inside.

DON'T LEAVE PETS IN VEHICLES  Never leave a pet locked in a car during cold weather. Cars can act like a fridge and hold cold air in, putting your pet at risk.

DON'T LET PETS OFF LEASH IN SNOW  Do not let your pet off leash in snow unless they are in a safely enclosed outdoor area. Dogs can lose their scent and become lost very quickly when it snows. More dogs get lost during winter than any other time of year. Make sure your pet is always wearing a collar and identification tag.  If you are separated from your pet, an ID tag may be his or her only ticket home.
